180–90 Days Out

Planning phase

Read your orders carefully; note report-no-later-than date and any special provisions.
Confirm BAH rate for Honolulu and dependents; set a housing budget range.
Start the Oahu neighborhood shortlist by duty station and priorities.
Decide rent vs. buy at a high level (revisit at 60 days out).
Contact a military-focused REALTOR® early — inventory on Oahu moves fast.
Begin school research if you have kids; note application windows.
Update DEERS with any dependent changes.

90–60 Days Out

Logistics phase

Schedule your HHG (household goods) move through TMO / MilMove.
Plan your POV (vehicle) shipment through the VPC — book early for Hawaii.
Start pet travel plans (Hawaii's Direct Airport Release program requires early rabies paperwork).
Book flights on the government travel portal or use PCS entitlements.
Get quotes and lock in a temporary lodging plan for arrival week.
Notify current landlord / list your current home if selling.
Start Oahu rental or home tours virtually with your agent.

60–30 Days Out

Locking things in

Confirm HHG pack/pickup dates and inventory expensive items.
Submit school enrollment applications; request records transfer.
Finalize Oahu housing plan: signed lease or offer accepted.
Confirm pet travel bookings and Direct Release paperwork.
Set up utilities (Hawaiian Electric, Board of Water Supply, internet).
Update address with USPS, banks, insurance, and voter registration.
Review medical/dental transfer of records to Tripler or on-island providers.

30–0 Days Out

Final countdown

Pack essentials bag: orders, IDs, medical records, laptop, chargers.
Withdraw enough cash and confirm your travel cards work internationally if routing via CONUS airports.
Confirm arrival lodging and rental car on Oahu.
Coordinate HHG delivery window with your on-island lease start.
Print/download digital copies of every PCS document.
Backup phone, computer, and household inventory photos.

Arrival Week on Oahu

Boots on the ground

In-process at your command / duty station.
Get your Hawaii driver's license (federal / military ID accepted for initial period, but plan the swap).
Register your POV in Hawaii; safety inspection required.
Enroll kids in school; hand-carry immunization and transcripts.
Take delivery of HHG; document any damage on the DD Form 1840.
Set up on-island medical, dental, and pediatric care.
Explore your new neighborhood — beaches, hikes, farmer's markets. You made it.
